The Grid was a University project looking at housing. The Grid was a huge housing complex at the old bus terminal in Kilbirnie, Wellington. It was made up of 3 housing types: high-density apartments, student communal housing and family separated houses. These were designed on a 5mx10m grid to create the different forms of housing.
I am more interested in community space than in housing so I used the project to look at what community spaces could be created with housing. In the family housing area, I looked at how this might become a community garden between dwellings. At the high-density apartments which are right next to a retirement village, I looked at bringing the wider community in with markets and in the middle, next to the student housing I looked at community spaces and classes.
This is one of the University projects I am most proud of and love how it came out and inspired conversation.
